Everything You Need to Know About Home EV Charger Installation in the GTA
Bringing an EV home is exciting — but figuring out how to charge it overnight, safely and affordably, is where most homeowners have questions.
Here's what actually goes into a home EV charger installation in Ontario, from the electrical side to the paperwork.
Do you actually need a Level 2 charger?
Technically, most EVs can charge from a regular household outlet (Level 1), but it's slow — often adding only 5-8 km of range per hour. A Level 2 charger, running on a 240V circuit, typically adds 30-45 km of range per hour, which is the difference between "fully charged by morning" and "barely made a dent overnight." For most homeowners who drive daily, a Level 2 charger isn't a luxury — it's what makes EV ownership actually convenient.
Will your electrical panel handle it?
This is the question that trips people up. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 40-50A circuit, and not every home has that capacity sitting unused in its panel. The good news: it's rarely an all-or-nothing situation. A proper assessment usually turns up one of three outcomes:
- Your panel has enough spare capacity — installation is straightforward, no upgrade needed.
- Smart load management can make it work — the charger shares capacity intelligently with the rest of your home, avoiding a costly panel upgrade.
- A panel upgrade is genuinely needed — usually because the panel is older or already near capacity for other reasons.
You won't know which applies to your home without an assessment, and it's worth getting one before you buy a charger, not after.
What about permits?
In Ontario, EV charger installations require an ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) permit and inspection — this isn't optional, and it matters more than most homeowners realize. Skipping it can create real problems with insurance claims or when selling your home down the line. A licensed electrician handles this as a standard part of the job.
Does the brand of charger matter?
It matters more than you'd think. Manufacturers like Tesla and ChargePoint run official installer certification programs, and using a certified installer can be a requirement for full warranty coverage on the charger itself. Popular options installed in the GTA include:
- Tesla Wall Connector — fastest charging for Tesla vehicles, compatible with other EVs via adapter
- ChargePoint Home Flex — smart, app-connected, works with virtually any EV
- FLO Home — Canadian-made, reliable in cold-weather climates
- Grizzl-E — durable and budget-friendly, built for Canadian winters
What does installation day actually look like?
For most homes, a Level 2 charger install takes 3-5 hours: final confirmation of charger location, running the dedicated circuit from your panel, mounting and wiring the charger, testing with your actual vehicle, and a walkthrough of the app and features.
